Team leaders meeting Middle distance

Invitation to the Middle Distance Event Centre and course setter’s point of view on the terrain

The Middle Distance Event Centre is situated in the south-eastern suburb of Jablonec nad Nisou, near the Mšeno reservoir. Throughout the whole year, the reservoir and the adjacent Sport center called Břízky offer a wide range of sport and recreational activities.

The competition centre as well as the finish area will be at the Břízky biathlon arena, where the Czech Republic biathlon championships regularly occur. This is also a locality where you can meet Czech biathlon stars, who train at this arena. The Břízky biathlon arena will provide a high-quality venue for competitors, spectators and event organizers alike.

The terrain is a classic submontane spruce forest with a dense network of paths. The competition area consists of highly sloping areas, with occasional steep descents and climbs. The paths are such that it is possible to ride very fast, even in the wet. There is a track system for skiing and biathlon in this area.

Milan Jirásek, the planner of the courses, considers the area the best terrain for middle distance racing in the Czech Republic. Most of the ski tracks that fully utilize the character of the terrain require a very high level of fitness and physical ability as well as navigational skills and skiing techniques.  The competition is going to be interesting for spectators because all courses will have a compulsory stage across the finish arena, which will contribute to the attractiveness of the competition.  The Břízky biathlon arena is situated on a hill above the city and thus allows the spectators to observe how the competition proceeds and at the same time to observe the city of Jablonec and Mount Ještěd, the dominant feature of the Liberec region.
